Model Programs
Below are some model programs of sharing psychology research with the public that may serve as inspiration for future programs. If you have a program you think should be featured on this page, please share!
- Zimbardo's Heroic Imagination Project - features 6 social psychology topics (e.g., the bystander effect) in which social factors influence individual behavior. Each presentation informs the audience with ways to recognize these situations and react in a more constructive manner. While Zimbardo's HIP organization charges for access to these materials, we've used them enough to learn that having students learn and present psychological topics to others can be an excellent service-learning activity and a unique way to share psychology with the lay public. We can certainly develop our own materials and make them available if there is interest.
- Jon Skalski at Rockford University created a video of a crime, and involved his students in several aspects of dealing with the police to show how memory may not be as good as we might assume. You can see his blog post (including a link to the news video) at http://nobaproject.com/blog/2017-03-30-demo-lishing-misconceptions-in-general-psychology-with-demos . Consider doing something similar in your community.
- Bill Altman at SUNY Broome Community College - created this website in conjunction with Taking it to the Streets: How to Give Psychology Away and Become a Local Media Hero, a workshop offered at the 30th annual NITOP (National Institute for the Teaching of Psychology) conference on January 3, 2008 in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida.
- Helping Give Away Psychological Science - From their website: "In 2016, HGAPS was founded by Dr. Mian-Li Ong and Dr. Eric Youngstrom at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It began as a student organization focused on enhancing evidence-based assessment content on the internet. In 2017, HGAPS was incorporated and ruled as a 501(c)(3) national service organization in March 2018. Since then, many HGAPS chapters have started across the country, and HGAPS has collaborated with organizations and people worldwide."
